Oh, and it has not changed. Ever since P5 the systems have been delivered
with that partition that was there for final shipping testing. On systems
that had only LAN console and no partition specify on the order, it would
actually be a full copy of i5/OS.

(I used the appropriate name for the time when it was shipped that way)

Jim,

Figured it out.
At the server level, I had to assign max processor to Sharepool1.
Now Sharepool1 appears at the partition level in the Processor Pool Drop
down.

Question.
With the P9 and HMC 7063, the server itself is considered a partition,
partition ID 1.

This did not appear on my current P7 and HMC 7063.

When did this change?

Paul

Jim,

Followed that path, only Defaultpool(0) appears in the dropdown window to
select.
There must be another setting somewhere to allow shared processor pools
somewhere.

Two step process: First under "partitions" (there won't be any) near the
top press "Create Partition" and follow the wizard.

Now you have a partition with a default profile.

Click on the partition and under actions, Profiles, Manage Profiles. Now
you are in the "old" interface and you can manage the partition profile as
you remember how to from the old interface.

Stupid. Why not just drop us into that dialog in the first place.

ASMI steps completed.
P9-9009-42A Powered on to standby.
All CPU, Memory, PCI cards reporting in correctly.

Creating my first partition.

Where do I define/allocate processors to the shared processor pool,
SharedPool01?

Somehow, on HMC network setup, eth0, Enable DHCP Server became unchecked.
Re-enabled DHCP, HMC now sees the server.

Onward.

Yea that short walk tends to heal several wounds and settle folks down.

As I said before, the P9s just need time to fight a bit.

Hi Paul

yes, that's assuming the IP address is already assigned (like for
instance if you moved it from another HMC) The find function uses a
range of addresses to look for a specific system, again assuming an
address has been assigned. Basically there's a DHCP thing going on
between the HMC and the Managed Server.

if the system has not been powered on or connected to a HMC before
then just check your HMC cabling to make sure it is correct. If you
have to change it you might need to give it a few minutes.I;ve
occasionally been a bit frustrated and then the managed system just
pops up so going for a short walk can't hurt. A watched pot never
boils
and all that.

Evan,

Hi Paul

You should only need the connection between the HMC and the server at
this point, so you only need the connection to between Ethernet
Connector 1 on the HMC and HMC1 port on the Power server.

If the cabling is correct you can always use the HMC Find Managing
system function to go and search for the system. if it is not
connected then connecting it should be enough but you will need to be
a little bit patient as it takes a few minutes.

Evan,

I'll have to repeat these steps below, since my HMC did not see the
server.

- Connect Power to the Managed System; watch them complete the
intitial power on sequence (basically until the power light is
flashing)
- Look for the managed system in the HMC using the serial number to
verify; if my cabling is correct it should have connected and be
waiting for first time authentication

Question.
Do the server's 5899 NIC cards have to be connected at this time?
I didn't think they did?

Hi Paul

I am not sure which manual the table you are referring to appears
in, but generally the sequence of events I follow is something like:
- cable up the machine(s) and HMC including network cables
- Power up the HMC and perform basic configuration
- Connect Power to the Managed System; watch them complete the
intitial power on sequence (basically until the power light is
flashing)
- Look for the managed system in the HMC using the serial number to
verify;
if my cabling is correct it should have connected and be waiting for
first
time authentication
- Go through and enter the managed system passwords and ASMI
passwords
- At that point I might start the Managed system using the HMC

I would not skip the passwords as they are required to allow the HMC
to manage the system.

Hope this helps.

13. Connect the managed system to a power source.

14. Set passwords for the managed system, and each of the ASMI

15. Access ASMI to set the date and time on the managed system.

16. Start the managed system and return to this checklist when you
have completed this step.

Questions.

1) Do steps 14 and 15 need to be completed at this time or can they
be done at a latter point?

I've never logged into our ASMI on our current system.

Step 16,

2) How is the managed system stated at this point?

Does it need to be powered on manually before it is added "Add
managed system"?

How is it powered on this done if not yet appearing on the HMC?

Thank You
