Assuming you have the cable between the HMC and system plugged in correctly,
no, none of the interface cards need to be plugged in or functional.

Subject: RE: HMC 7063-CR1 configuration and initial P9 power on

Evan,

I'll have to repeat these steps below, since my HMC did not see the server.

- Connect Power to the Managed System; watch them complete the intitial
power on sequence (basically until the power light is flashing)
- Look for the managed system in the HMC using the serial number to verify;
if my cabling is correct it should have connected and be waiting for first
time authentication

Question.
Do the server's 5899 NIC cards have to be connected at this time?
I didn't think they did?

Paul

Hi Paul

I am not sure which manual the table you are referring to appears in, but
generally the sequence of events I follow is something like:
- cable up the machine(s) and HMC including network cables
- Power up the HMC and perform basic configuration
- Connect Power to the Managed System; watch them complete the intitial
power on sequence (basically until the power light is flashing)
- Look for the managed system in the HMC using the serial number to verify;
if my cabling is correct it should have connected and be waiting for first
time authentication
- Go through and enter the managed system passwords and ASMI passwords
- At that point I might start the Managed system using the HMC

I would not skip the passwords as they are required to allow the HMC to
manage the system.

Hope this helps.

13. Connect the managed system to a power source.

14. Set passwords for the managed system, and each of the ASMI passwords

15. Access ASMI to set the date and time on the managed system.

16. Start the managed system and return to this checklist when you
have completed this step.

Questions.

1) Do steps 14 and 15 need to be completed at this time or can they be
done at a latter point?

I've never logged into our ASMI on our current system.

Step 16,

2) How is the managed system stated at this point?

Does it need to be powered on manually before it is added "Add managed
system"?

How is it powered on this done if not yet appearing on the HMC?

Thank You
