Are the connections being retried over and over to your mail router or
directly to the recipient's email server? It should be the former, not the
latter.

If you're not using a mail router of any type, when you try to deliver you
are going right to the recipients email server. The biggest issue most
will have, and reject your attempt, is because of no reverse DNS entry, or
not a trusted reverse DNS entry.

Post some of the logs. IBM's logs for SMTP aren't the greatest, but there
are some clues in there I bet to those of us that are familiar with SMTP.

We have hundreds of entries in the WRKSMTPEMM screen, showing email of type

I've been using option 8 to display log entries pertaining to email
entries, but I don't understand many of the log entries. Connections to
email domains appear to be retried over and over, without success. As far
as I can tell, the log doesn't indicate whether a recipient domain is
rejecting the messages, or not.

Sometimes mail is delivered as expected, other times, not! Delivering to
Yahoo appears to be particularly problematic.

Are we missing something fundamental?
