You're sending a trailing space as part of the password.

Good eye. I actually noticed that too, but I was really determined to
arrive at a mutual understanding of the interactive process, and how
TTY is different than 5250. I was going to bring up the space if OP
confirmed that he could interactively use sftp from PASE, but we never
got to that point.

Looking back, I should have pointed it out as soon as he mentioned
that interactive ssh from PASE worked.
