when i go into qp2term and spawn the sftp request I do not get any
prompts...??

Without being able to run an interactive session, I really think you are
playing pin the tail on the donkey. I think we just have one script that we
share between two different servers. All the rest of the servers have their
own scripts because the prompts are different. This one sends password:
when it wants the password and sftp> when it wants a command. Looking at
another one it appears that it sends login -> when it wants the password
and the command prompt is just a $. I've never used autoexpect that Jack is
suggesting, but I've always basically done the same thing. Get to a command
line and run the sftp session interactively and write down the prompts.
Then use those to create my expect sessions.

thanks kevin,

it is not working with 2 out of 2 non-iseries servers I'm testing
against...
but works with an internal iSeries sftp server...

the outside company provided logs but did not tell me nothing.
the internal network guys said that each time i'd attempt connection wtih
the internal sftp server I"d get blacklisted... they fix and I'd retry and
it would blacklist me.

I'll try your script...

None of my expect scripts are used to connect to iseries boxes. All are

windows or linux boxes. Your issue is with this particular server. If you
can't get server operator to help you by looking at the logs on their
side,
then it is hard to tell you what is wrong.

This script runs many times a day and works fine.
#!/usr/local/bin/expect -f
spawn sftp -oPort=9002 xxxx@a.b.c.d
expect "password:"
send "pass\n"
expect "sftp>"
send "cd current\n"
expect "sftp>"
send "mget *\n"
expect "sftp>"
send "quit\n"

the conclusion i arrived at as well...

Jack do you see anything wrong with this script?
If not, and nobody can produce a simple script the use to connect to a
non-iseries sftp server, I'm going to conclude nobody knows how or it
can't
be done.
(good talent on this list is what I'm trying to say :))

#!/usr/local/bin/expect -f
set timeout 20
spawn sftp -vvv -o PreferredAuthentications=password -oport=22
$env(SSH_USER)@10.175.96.213
expect {
default {exit 2}
"continue connecting (yes/no)?" {send "yes\n"; exp_continue}
"assword:" {send "$env(SSH_PASS) \n"; exp_continue}
"sftp>"
}
expect {
default {exit 2}
"not found" {exit 3}
"sftp>"
}
send "quit\n"
exit 0

Kevin, no... if I do the following steps, I never get prompted for a

1.) call qp2term
2.) sftp -vvv -o PreferredAuthentications=password -oport=22

shouldn't I be getting a prompt for password?

Your log seems to have clipped anything after a comma. eg. this

debug2: we sent a password packet

should read

debug2: we sent a password packet, wait for a reply

I'm not sure whether the missing data is necessary, but it would
be
nice
to have.

In any event, based on what is in the log it would appear that
after
sending a password packet your remote server is not replying but
instead
just closing the connection. That seems odd to me. The server's
log
might
shed some light on the problem, but of course you don't have
access
to
that. You may have to contact the system owner and see if they
can
figure
it out.

Can you connect to the server normally? It's just the expect
script
which
fails?
