thanks kevin,

it is not working with 2 out of 2 non-iseries servers I'm testing against...
but works with an internal iSeries sftp server...

the outside company provided logs but did not tell me nothing.
the internal network guys said that each time i'd attempt connection wtih
the internal sftp server I"d get blacklisted... they fix and I'd retry and
it would blacklist me.

I'll try your script...

Jack do you see anything wrong with this script?
If not, and nobody can produce a simple script the use to connect to a
non-iseries sftp server, I'm going to conclude nobody knows how or it can't
be done.
(good talent on this list is what I'm trying to say :))
