I thought I was pretty clear.  I want it to act the way it used to, because I like that.

So presumably you mean you want "Keep window size" to be off, but
still with "Automatic sizing" for the font. When I use this
combination of settings in the old client, switching from 24x80 to
27x132 results in all three of the following: (1) the window gets a
*little* larger horizontally, (2) the window gets a *little* smaller
vertically, and (3) the font gets significantly smaller.

In my case, the viewable area in the old software goes from 960x480 to 1056x486.  This means the height actually gets a little larger. There are more lines, so as it turns out, in my case the height of the font in 27x132 is 85% of the 24x80, while the width is 67%.

In the new ACS, the window doesn't change but the used vertical portion of the screen in 27x132 drops to 400 pixels.  That's fully 20% smaller.  What that means is the character height goes from 21 pixels to 15 pixels, a drop of nearly 30%.  The old version only drops to 18 pixels, a drop of roughly 14% and much more visually appealing.

So this is what you want? You still want the font to be smaller, just
not AS small as if the window keeps its width?

Never having had occasion to analyze it, I simply knew I wanted it to behave the same way.  But if you're demanding justification, my eyes react particularly poorly to the reduced height.  Simply put: I don't want the font size to get significantly shorter when I switch modes.  And it seems that 15% is my threshold.

While I do think that ideally, everyone should be able to achieve the
behavior that works best for them, I am not especially sympathetic in
this case. Not because what you want is somehow invalid, but because
the behavior is so poorly specified..

So, actually the behavior is seems pretty well specified.  Leave the window roughly the same height, and use a font that is about a third narrower.  And since I am fine with the font getting narrower, but not significantly shorter, this is perfect for me!
