One software vendor I do business with normally drops support for obsolete
releases the day IBM does. However, they say there's a significant
percentage of their customer base willing to fork over the dough to IBM
for extended support for 7.1 so they won't be following their usual
pattern. We'll see if that's true when this base has to actually start
cutting checks.

I think extended support is one of those vested interest things. People
who make the decision to do that are highly unlikely to say "Man, did I
screw up".
