From memory Diacritic mode was set using the Tilde key - the wavy line that

Thanks James - if there is a way to stop the terminal talking in
"diacritic" character mode that might do it. If I type, unexpected (but
not random) Western characters appear, and I think the little "d" mode
symbol appears in the bottom row. Actually I have no clue..... but the
Troubleshooting Booklet says "to find out how to exit Diacritic Mode see
your system operator or the system program manual." I've removed all the
keys and cleaned up. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be :-)
