Thanks, Martin. How I wish it were that simple!

A couple of hours after system A fails, system B succeeds with the same
library.

I wonder if BRMS decided that all the available tapes belong to system B?

Probably not the same issue, but I've had similar where the tape library
couldn't access the tapes at the front of the drive. It turned out the
server above the library in the rack had been moved, and a threaded bolt
had got wedged between the two, creasing the cover and pinching it,
preventing the final few inches of travel of the cassette mover!. All
tapes
except the front set were accessible. Took me a while to figure out what
was happening - ended up using a torch to watch inside the library! Some
backups worked, and others failed - all depending on whether they wanted
a
tape from that front set!

There is an error in QSYSOPR log:

There are lots of Ultrium 3 tapes in the tape library in *EXP state,
e.g,:

EVR480 *EXP 10/21/17 11/25/17 TAPMLB01 11/22/17 ULTRIUM3
EVR486 *EXP 11/15/17 11/23/17 TAPMLB01 11/14/17 ULTRIUM3

etc.

The device is varied on, yes I checked.

What does this piece of unspeakable dross want from me this time?
