Nathan,

They use a separate service since the IBM SMTP system can't handle SSL/TLS
and or authentication. At least at an individual email level instead of a
system-wide level.

They set up the mail router to be this PC which then handles the SSL/TLS
and/or authentication. Bandaid approach with another link in the chain to
fail.

I've seem some people claim to send email through GMail or MS but when I
check the settings they are actually just sending emails directly with not
mail router in between and getting lucky the recipients emails aren't
rejecting it for no reverse DNS, etc.

I've seen it all. :)

It pains me that the IBM i needs Windows in order to send email. That's

In regard to sending email from IBM i (applications, command line, etc.), a
separate relay service (Windows, Google, Message Labs, whatever) is not
required. Perhaps others can explain the "benefits", if any.
