The spirit of what he was saying is "we're trying to get away from being
tied to any
particular database or machine".

Regarding "the spirit", that's ambiguous. Regarding the goal of not being
tied to any particular database or machine, that's idealistic, and arguably
illogical. Experience tells us that migrations from one platform to another
always end up being little more than shifting dependencies.

If someone is asking for a road map to migrate away from IBM i (i.e. ILE
languages and the IBM i DB), they should first decide what platforms
(plural) they want to migrate too.

The problem with thinking in terms of SQL CLI is that its procedures are
called from host languages, which in the case of IBM i, means ILE
languages. That doesn't fit the bill for freeing dependencies on the IBM i
platform.

Perhaps SQL/PSM would have been more accurate than either of the terms
we're discussing.

SQL PL is the familiar term for SQL PSM. The version implemented on IBM i
is very close to the version implemented on DB2 for Linux, Unix, and
Windows.
