Something more to add to your nightmares:

What's the estimated usable shelf life for a u-burn-it DVD vs a tape backup?

Last time I paid attention a DVD might have 5-10 year life (depending on the quality of the DVD and how well the burn went). The tape may have 20-30 year life.

We rely on good tape backups, and can selectively restore data from our month end saves going back at least 7 years.

I have done some saves of some 'archive' data to the DVD drive. Very slow
but it did take up very little physical space on the shelf compared to a
tape cartridge.
