Like Larry I have not used a physical DVD in I can't remember how long.
Some customers have actually dropped them from orders, although IBM get's
cranky about it.

IBM i or VIOS does not much matter the DVD virtualizes so well you really
don't need a physical one anymore.

Like Larry said, the virtualized DVD is stupid fast by comparison to a
physical one.

The latest trick I've used is setting up the TFTP server on my laptop and
using that for network installation. That lets you get the first partition
loaded and you can virtualize everything from there.

Ok, so instead of a physical dvd you have an ISO file.
If it isn't the latest respin, might that still give you grief when you
"boot from that"?

What is this thing "DVD" you keep mentioning? :-)

I haven't booted from one of those in years except to install VIOS.
Firstly You can host the i_BASE disk in the host partition in an image
catalog and boot from that. It is STUPID fast too, you get C600 codes
before the HMC can refresh!

Mostly though I do network installs because with that you don't need any
i_BASE from IBM you can use DSLO media with all the PTFs already applied.
