Great point.

Check out the programming of a GPS with a touchscreen. I input an address last week and was surprised how few keystrokes if took. It was 37 characters for state, city, street, and street number. I touched the screen about 14 times. As to speed, it was always waiting for me. The design was much faster than 5250 could ever be.

To all who are involved in the design of a "UI" ... (or "user experience"...):

What is sorely lacking in all of these discussions of "modernizing" whether using a Windows style GUI or a web browser based one, is the whole concept of "human factors engineering."

The reason why the IBM 3270 and 5250 are so "productive" especially for heads-down keyboarding / data entry activities, is because IBM spent real money hiring psychologists and human factors engineers and this went into the design of those devices.

I see very few examples of any companies even giving this a second thought when designing a "graphical user interface" ...

Just sayin ...

UI designers don't realize that you CAN make it sparkle but functional at
the same time...
Moving from a blackberry to my current android phone made me LESS efficient
due to the lack of tactile response on the keyboard, but it's shiny and so
it must be good...
