Well, not quite.....

VIOS simply uses a 9th sector for every 8 sectors of 512 byte sector size to emulate the 520 byte sector. IBM i is still using 520 byte sectors, it's just that VIOS can emulate it with 512 byte sector formatted drives.

On my 720 the VIOS supported IBM i instances do have slower disk performance than the ones that use native disk. (not by much and you really have to dig to find it, but it's there)
