Sounds a lot like the way Casino's are setup (or use to be - had a tour 20 years ago in Atlantic City). All the slots were connected to a Dec Vax for real time data collection. That data was then loaded to their S/38 database on a regular schedule. I think it was every 15 minutes. And immediate reports sent if a slot was paying odd too much or too little.

Kinda agree. Think about when you're doing the IPL or OS upgrade or whatever. Will you shut down production? If so, then go for it. Otherwise offloading may be the answer. We used to do that when we had wire making facilities. We had counters that measure the wire being made and other shop floor equipment. They updated a dedicated computer (actually I think we started with a Dec Vax before the PC) then data was transmitted to the
S/36 (then ... then...). I think we used remote data queues.

My thought is you would want to get the data written somewhere (local PC
file perhaps) as FAST as possible.

Then you could have a background app that's writing the transactions to
the iSeries at a slower pace unless you need the iSeries app to have
real-time interaction.

If it's TCP/IP based you could use Sockets programming.

If you decide to outsource any of the development let me know. We have
written similar apps before but have not worked with your particular PLC.

Usually the idea is to offload the PLC the device transactions as quickly
as possible.

Let us know the ultimate outcome.

subject: Mitsubishi PLC interface to AS400 Data Tables

Hi All,

One of our assembly divisions recently acquired a Mitsubishi PLC module
that they would like to connect to our AS400. They sent me the manual and
it is an absolute nightmare to try and understand how the two systems are
supposed to communicate. There's a lot of talk on triggers, local
transports, etc., etc. It looks like a really powerful system, but I am
having a very hard time interpreting what needs to be done from the
manual.

The model number of the interface they purchased is QJ71MES96IT. They
also purchased the transport/database module part number MESITTRNSDB2 to
compliment the MES IT interface.

So my question is (and yes, it is a very broad question as I really do not
have a starting point) - how do I get the data from the PLC into an AS400
table? Does anyone have any experience with this module that can help me
understand how this is accomplished?

Any ideas, or resources I might be able to access to help me understand?

Thankee-sai!

/b;
