That possibility was actually the first to occur to me. But the file is too consistent.

Yet another possibility is that the zone nybble is being used to carry additional data. While memory and disk space are far too cheap these days to justify "piggybacking" data like that in a file, I've been known to do it in situations involving fixed bandwidth, no spare bytes left, and no easy way to expand the bandwidth (I'd be more specific, but then I'd have to . . .)
