The internal search function is temporarily non-functional. The current search engine is no longer viable and we are researching alternatives.

I'm using the V6R1 release of iSeries Access, which shows 5.9 in the Help/About, on Windows 7 64-bit connecting to V5R4M5. I don't have the issue you mention. Granted, I only tested it quickly, so perhaps there are other issues and it isn't "every time" for you either. I would suggest checking the service pack level, though I just started noticing really strange issues yesterday where my screen isn't updated properly. My understanding is there are no more planned service packs for that version. Mine shows 20110428 S at the bottom of the Help/About window. That is service pack SI42423.
I think I like Rob's answer - upgrade to 7.1 (client and server). Just as soon as I get some of that spare time I've heard about. At least I've disconnected the last Perle controller and dumb terminal; one step closer to 7.1!

Subject: Workstation Names
Our tech folks are starting to roll out 64-bit Windows 7 PC's with the iSeries Access emulator, version 5.9. They have set them up with the workstation-id to use the computer name and have checked the checkbox "avoid duplicate names on this workstation". There is a single desktop icon that they use to open up one or more sessions. The system adds a letter to the end of the workstation id to create the session name. The problem is that it's not re-using device names when they close and re-open a session. I have also found that the system shows that each one is still at "signon screen" instead of "varied on". Still, if I vary off/on the devices it won't re-use them. We are on V5R4. Thoughts?
