How would I know for sure? One, I would start with
https://www-304.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssm1platformibmi

Then if it said I needed 6.1.1 or 7.1 I would get to the highest level
supported on the existing hardware I had. I would use the latest respin
for that release available to get to that level. And, I would put the
latest cume and groups I had. After that I would "assume" that was
sufficient. Others may search ptf cover letters for any new pieces of
hardware and see if there are any individual PTF's that are not in a cume
or group which mention that hardware. I'd skip that level. Just lazy. I
would probably miss the hit anyway. For example a 2844 card may be known
as different features based on what you are sticking it into and I would
probably miss that on the search, or IBM wouldn't pick all the various
combo's for the ptf cover letter.

For example, I took a 270 to 5.4.5 from 5.4. And put the latest cume and
groups on it. Then I upgraded that to Power 6. Then I upgraded that to
6.1.1. (It's now running 7.1.)
