Well OK, that's what I wanted to hear. I guess Jack must have missed
one of those guys and that's what I was trying to nail down.
We do just that all the time (build a customer set of current images)
and I was just checking if I had missed something.

You do *NOT* need to reload the system with a given RS level to get to
that level of fixes.  Virtually every O/S upgrade i do is from a custom
set of images or tape created from a partition that has never been
reloaded from s new RS images. It's an equivalent level not a 'specific'
level that is in play here.  If you have an IBM i 7.1 partition and have
loaded current Technology Refresh, HIPER, DB, CUMe, TCP, Java, etc and
you create distribution media from that, you have media that's NEWER
than the most recent respin no matter what level it's at.

It's not about getting to an 'exact' level of PTFs, it's about getting
to 'at least' that level of PTFs.

Kind of insane if specific hardware requires certain minimum spin levels.
You should be able to get there with something a little easier than
reloading LIC and then re-applying PTFs.

Per IBM way of thinking, you can only get to a Re-spin level by installing
that level. The idea is IBM makes a master ( re-spin ) with a 'known' set of
code levels and PTFs. They can not guaranty you can get your system to that
very specific set of code by PTFs.  So basically you need to SLIP LIC and
the Base OS with the desired Re-spin media. Then apply all your favorite
PTFs.

I understand re-spin - it was the RSE I missed.

I'm still curious as to how to get a given level of system up to the
next level if applying cumes and groups as you did is not sufficient.
Unless you missed the last cume and didn't have the technology refresh
PTF installed.

Given any standalone system, how would I establish what spin level of
lic is currently running on it ?

Evan, respin is what version of lic levels your running.

Yes respins, Kirk can break down what the -C and -10 are, looks like
revision C??  Is there a website that says how you can migrate systems
based
on RSE levels.  From what I was told I had 3 options to choose from, I
choose the route that would take the least amount of time.  Intermixing
power hardware and hmc controlled/non hmc controlled systems seems to be
a
mix'n'match currently on if it will work or not.

RSE  is a short way to say RS-610-E being Respin V6R1 rev E

Looks like from the Link posted earlier
http://www-947.ibm.com/systems/support/i/planning/resave/index.html

LIC respins are Alpha and SS1 are Numeric
V7R1 is currently at -C and -10
V6R1M1 is currently at -D  and -10
V6R1M0 is currently at -G and -10

I'm familiar with a re-spin, but what does a respin have that

Haven't heard the term RSE to describe a respin either - what does it
stand for ? Are you sure they are the same thing ?

Respins or resaves of the OS.  Certain hardware may require that
the
LIC
be a certain level before installation.  Oh, it still may be 7.1,
but
it
may have more PTF's built into it.

Also some "technology refresh" ptf's are very comprehensive and IBM
sometimes generates a new respin to allow you to get an
installation
done
without really having to step through some strange hoops.

Even with a new resave you should apply the latest cume and the
latest
applicable groups.

I always use the latest resave from:
