Yes a 520 can be "operated" without an HMC. Now, what's your definition
of "operated"? Are you asking that if I have a 520, configured into
multiple lpars, and my HMC dies, could I continue to run it until I get a
new HMC? The answer is yes. Could I do a PWRDWNSYS RESTART(*YES)? I
could check. Would require powering off our two redundant HMC's and one
lpar that I have permission to IPL midday on a whim. Could I PWRDWNSYS
all lpars, and the unit itself and see if the lpars automatically fire up
upon firing up the unit? Well, I'm just not into that deep of a test for
grins and giggles. Besides, I'd have to reconfig the partitions to
automatically fire up when I turn on the fsp. I normally don't, in case
of firmware upgrades, etc. But all the lpars on the one 9408-M25 could be
brought down for reasonable testing.
