The internal search function is temporarily non-functional. The current search engine is no longer viable and we are researching alternatives.
As a stop gap measure, we are using Google's custom search engine service.

That is an usually high load for this machine.
Try running "vmstat 1" while the backup is running, and pay attention
to the "wa" column (IO wait). A high number in this column would
indicate a bottleneck in the IO subsystem on the Linux side.
In all my years of linux usage I've never run that particular command.
Very interesting. Running that shows typical results like this (while the
backup is running):
procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- -system--
----cpu----
r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id
wa
0 0 2568 6980 128 580576 0 0 0 211 478 296 0 0 99
1
That didn't format well, but it shows the "wa" column is 1. Running this
for some time results in an occasional 2 in that column and a somewhat
more frequent appearance of 0. In my opinion, those are not high numbers.
So I still think the iSeries is the source of the low performance.

if you want to understand why that is, there are many good books on
the design of operating systems. please pass them along to redmond
when you're done reading them :)
