Ok, I was going to question about something being lost in context but if
Scott says it I'd better slow down and think before replying. And you're
right. Here
mycmd="do some command parm('$1') anotherparm(x)"
we are not surrounding the variable with apostrophes to make it stand out.
We are simply inserting apostrophes into the string. And since we are
using quotes and not apostrophes around the whole string it will still
expand out the variable. If I didn't need the apostrophes (like in my ifs
stream file in the OP) then I would simply do
mycmd="do some command parm($1) anotherparm(x)"
and it would still expand out the variable.

When would it need the non invariant braces?
