I think that one of the drivers to all this was that the company decided
they did not want to use RPG any longer given the difficulty of finding RPG
programmers and especially RPG programmer who can write modern code. All the
RPG programmers here with the exception of me are monolith coders.

I am still not absolutely sure that was a correct decision because I think I
could take and train a person with some background in modern languages in
RPG/ILE quicker than you can find people with Java skills and you would get
the performance.

An interesting aside to that was I talked to a recruiter the other day who
said he had worked on a job in Simi Valley for consultants and claimed he
received 300 resumes from RPG programmers looking for work. They cut the pay
to $30 an hour paying your own expenses and still had a 100 people
interested. Don't know if true or not.

Another question that has come up is whether to use Java at all. My boss
talked to a consultant who had done it all and he said we were crazy and
should just be using .Net because everything we were developing was already
done with .Net. I don't know about that but we will see what happens in the
long run. They are definitely committed to the Java/Spring/Hibernate/Flex
route.

Nothing is done in PASE or QShell.

Well, it _will_ use PASE if you choose to use the J9 (32bit or 64bit) JVM
:) And Qshell is a common way of invoking java (although absolutely not
required).

You can always use the classic JVM if you want (up to 6.1 that is).

That's really splitting hairs, though. To use EGL, you never need to
use QP2TERM or STRQSH. And I think we agree that's what Rob was talking
about.

As it turns out, Trevor was saying that his client requires WAS on Unix
and that WAS is a horrible, horrible thing and that he can't get
response time under a minute. Not sure what he's going on about, since
EGL uses Tomcat just fine. And I get 100 msec response time, even with
WAS, on a model 270.

But hey, that's just me.

My guess is that they weren't using a thin EGL layer over an RPG back
end, and were instead doing a lot of SQL in the EGL code itself, without
really knowing what they were doing. Poorly tuned JDBC never performs
very well, but that's why I recommended to Alan that he be sure to get
EGL folks that also understand how to write i applications.
