Nothing is done in PASE or QShell.

Well, it _will_ use PASE if you choose to use the J9 (32bit or 64bit) JVM :) And Qshell is a common way of invoking java (although absolutely not required).

You can always use the classic JVM if you want (up to 6.1 that is).

That's really splitting hairs, though. To use EGL, you never need to use QP2TERM or STRQSH. And I think we agree that's what Rob was talking about.

As it turns out, Trevor was saying that his client requires WAS on Unix and that WAS is a horrible, horrible thing and that he can't get response time under a minute. Not sure what he's going on about, since EGL uses Tomcat just fine. And I get 100 msec response time, even with WAS, on a model 270.

But hey, that's just me.

My guess is that they weren't using a thin EGL layer over an RPG back end, and were instead doing a lot of SQL in the EGL code itself, without really knowing what they were doing. Poorly tuned JDBC never performs very well, but that's why I recommended to Alan that he be sure to get EGL folks that also understand how to write i applications.
