Thanks to all who have responded so far, and thanks in advance to anybody else who responds between now and tomorrow morning.
Theoretically, I could walk in tomorrow morning, try everything again, and have it work as if nothing had ever been wrong, in which case, I'll assume it was some temporary problem accessing the remote box. Assuming that doesn't happen, I've got a few things to try, and a few specific things to ask the customer's people to look into.
