Um... I think you misunderstand me.  I already think that the Eclipse 
tooling is on a par with VS from a purely mechanical aspect.  Eclipse's 
UI, especially the workbench/view/perspective paradigm, is in my mind 
superior to VS, but that's purely a subjective view.

No, the only place where VS wins is its integration to .Net (duh).  
Because it only has to support a small segment of the programming world, 
VS has an advantage.  Eclipse, since it's built to support everything, 
by its nature takes a little longer to ramp up.  But as an example, the 
Eclipse Java editor is the equal of any other editor out there.  On the 
other hand, the WYSIWYG editors aren't yet the equal of VS, although the 
Matisse folks think differently, and the JSF editor in Rational is 
getting darned close.

In fact, when we're talking apples to apples (or as close as we can get 
with the two, which would be J2EE to .Net) I see no place where VS is 
"Ferrari/buggy" better than Eclipse/Rational.  Where do you find the 
difference?
