Taking the long view on this, I'm reminded of a story I once heard from an IBM
ISV. He said that working with IBM was a little like being in bed with a
giant. Most of the time it's fine, but when he rolls over, you'd better watch
out.
So, anyone out there who has seen IBM reorganize before, raise your hands.
Yes, I see those hands going up all over the world!
I can count on a couple of fingers the number of IBM announcements that have
made a real core difference on what I do for a living. One was the
announcement of the 360. Another was the merging of the S36 and S38
technologies. There are probably a few others in there too.
In my time, IBM has been through many, many reorganizations of the type now
seen. In fact, parts of this organizational model sound strangely familiar as
if they've done this before in a former life. It looks to me like an attempt
on their part to get their own people to focus better on the market that's out
there.
Oops .... time to get back to my focus, working on good, sound System i
software for my customers.
