I don't know much about Mark Shearer but it sounds like he's the big winner in this reorganization. While the System i division has suffered from declining revenue under his leadership, it appears he managed to reorganize and take control over even more business units. He must be a good talker.

It appears we won't be hearing any more about declining System i revenue. Instead it looks like we'll be hearing about Power Systems (big systems), and SMB Business Unit (small systems) revenue, where small systems will be a combination of i, p, and x along with their respective operating systems.

In the broad sense, it's an acknowledgment by IBM that the System i platform isn't competing well in the market, which is sad. On the other hand, it's an acknowledgment that applications, middle-ware, and services are more important than hardware, which is good. Now more than ever the future of the System i is more in the hands of ISV's (the people who build applications) than IBM.

Subject: Complete re-vamp of IBM. No more System i division.

Anyone have thoughts on this?
