So long as you use LVLCHK(*NO) when compiling with outfiles you should be 
OK with release upgrades.  IBM will generally add new fields to the end of 
the outfile record format (much like how new fields are added to the end 
of API structures).

Outfiles are simple, however I've been burned by release upgrades changing 

the format of output files.  I tend to use API's more often now.  Although 

API's tend to be more work.  Especially the first time you use a list api.

That being said however, if you want to look at api's to list out member 
information.
