I'm aware of the save outq capability and losing the spool files is not a show stopper

One of the points of difference I mentioned between the options was losing spool files but I was evaluating what options would/might make a straightforward hardware upgrade easier and/or simpler. Adding an unnecessary V5R4 upgrade into the mix doesn't help that and being able to save spool files during a disk upgrade (probably) wouldn't justify installing V5R4 all by itself.

Actually the upgrade to V5R4 gives you the opportunity to save the
contents of output queues (spool files).
New options on SAVOBJ and SAVLIB include:
Spooled file data . . . . . . . *NONE *NONE, *ALL
Queue data . . . . . . . . . . . *NONE *NONE, *DTAQ
or
SAVLIB SPLFDTA(*NONE) QDTA(*NONE)

And in your original post one of your concerns was about losing your spool
files.
