Actually the upgrade to V5R4 gives you the opportunity to save the 
contents of output queues (spool files).
New options on SAVOBJ and SAVLIB include:
Spooled file data  . . . . . . .   *NONE         *NONE, *ALL 
Queue data . . . . . . . . . . .   *NONE         *NONE, *DTAQ
or
SAVLIB SPLFDTA(*NONE) QDTA(*NONE)

And in your original post one of your concerns was about losing your spool 
files.
