"Always" is hard to apply. And, in some cases you may want to use SQL for single row fetches. For example, if I have a bolt on application that is supposed to work on both BPCS405CD and BPCS8, don't you think that using a CHAIN might be hard on this file layout: IIM - Item master: BPCS8 Field Start End Attrib Text IID 1 2 A2 Record ID (IM/IZ) IPROD 3 37 O35 Item Number IDESC 38 87 O50 Item Description ... IIM - Item master: BPCS405CD Field Start End Attrib Text IID 1 2 A2 Record ID; IM/IZ IPROD 3 17 A15 Item Number IDESC 18 47 A30 Item Description ... Not only did they add new fields, etc, but they changed the "key" size, etc. Chain may be faster - but better? Rob Berendt
