We had a lightning strike get into our computer room for the second time in my 20 year history with current employer, also this never happened with other employers I had for 30 years before that. The first time we lucked out, just a big red flash in computer room, missing everything. The last month one melted battery in a UPS.

It turns out that not every UPS company has identical guarantees regarding what happens if lightning bolt gets through their equipment to hurt whatever is protected on the other end.

Further, I had previously said not to run printers thru UPS, because we have power outages all the time, this way we get better protection without the printer drain, but the PC guys are saying that if there ever is another lightning strike, we are better off financially with 100% equipment protected by a UPS company that will replace anything that gets fried. I'd like to see the fine print that also pays for the license fees to get OS and software that is licensed to a particular CPU serial #.

APC and PowerWare make good units. Your BP should be able to provide the
power consumption specs. Consider before you purchase how long you need the
system to be up when utility power fails, and get suitable battery capacity.
