As far as I'm concerned, the i5 and p5 are the same, they are just limited by the manufacturer as to what OS they can run and in what quantity. It's also limited by the amount of cross-marketing IBM does in regard to the multi-OS-ability of the machines. The i-side is marketed as integrated, the p-side is marketed as speed and cheap. It's difficult to even find references to running i5/OS on p at the IBM website for the server. At least more difficult than the i's site. I really don't wanna get in to the old-timer/new-timer urination contest - we do that every few months here it seems. The people who are excited about the POWER5+ platforms are out touting it, selling it, and running their businesses on it. The people who aren't - well, that's their loss, I guess. Enjoy IPLing your whole box if you have primary/secondaries. I'll IPL an LPAR and leave everything else up. ;) And in regard to the "that'll be on the iSeries in 6 months" - the 595 in the article is the same other than clock speed between i5 and p5. Some of the i and p models offered today run at 1.9 GHz, so they're mechanically the same. IIRC, the newest pSeries from your article is at 2.1/2.3 GHz. And I imagine it will be offered to i soon, because a 570 sitting 20 feet from me is at 2.2. And it runs Linux and AIX. To summarize: I AGREE! I think everyone should be running i - have some Kool-Aid, it's delicious. =) -- Justin C. What I would like to accomplish is to change attitudes from "can't do" to "can do." When I read the announcement that a p5 had broken TCP benchmarks my first thought was "Great, that'll be on an i5 in less than 6 months!" But what I heard here was: (yawn) How can we support our system with people who don't drink the kool-aid when we don't even truly support it ourselves? At the briefing I was at yesterday the biggest news was the the new version of WebSphere Whatever for iSeries had GA'd on the same day as the version for all of the other platforms. I get discouraged about the state of the iSeries community when it's all doom and gloom, and IBM doesn't care about us, etc. Regards, Scott Ingvaldson iSeries System Administrator GuideOne Insurance Group PS That 170 I was talking about is still under support and I've never had any problems with IBM about that. -----Original Message----- date: Fri, 28 Jul 2006 10:52:23 -0500 from: "Haase, Justin C." <justin.haase@xxxxxxxxxxxx> subject: RE: i5 vs. p5 And IBM doesn't make a 170 anymore nor would IBM allow you to install that much memory and be supported when you had a problem. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? pFrankenseries? -- Justin C. Haase - iSeries System Engineer IBM Certified Systems Expert - System i Kingland Systems Corporation
