The response from IBM support was:

"It is strongly recommended that you put the cumulative and group PTFs

into one image catalog and then use GO PTF option 8 with the Prompt for
Media parameter set to 2 to install the PTFs. Then, IPL the system."

Group PTF installs

In V5R3 and V5R4, since you have the ability to install multiple PTF
packages at once using GO PTF option 8, you can install the
groups, the
cume, and then IPL. Its much quicker.

While you are right, it worked for 20 years, that was V5R2
and below. Its
not your grandfather's AS/400 anymore. :)

You should ALWAYS install the cume, IPL, and then install the groups
after the INZSYS completes when doing an OS upgrade. I
don't remember
the exact terminology but I'm pretty sure you get a message
when trying
to install the groups before the INZSYS completes and it
won't let you.
When doing a ptf install only I do the groups first then the cume
followed by one IPL. Has worked for 20 years!

That is the practice I've always followed, no matter what
the release.

V5r4 Upgrade, IPL required between Cume and Group PTF installs

All,

Normally, when installing cume and group PTFs, I install
the group PTFs
first followed by the cume PTFs.

However, the v5r4 upgrade instructions seem to be pretty clear to
install the cume PTFs prior to installing group PTFs.

My question is, do you need to do the automatic IPL for the
cume PTFs to
be applied (and wait for INZSYS to complete) before
installing the group
PTFs?

I don't remember how I did the v5r3 upgrade <grin>

Thanks,

Charles Wilt
