How the heck to you do that? >From the manual, "Before UPDATE is issued to a file or record, a valid input operation with lock (READ, READC, READE, READP, READPE, CHAIN, or primary/secondary file) must be issued to the same file or record." I know that the DELETE op-code supports DELETE'ing without first reading. And WRITE obviously doesn't need a read first. But neither would help the OP as he specifically said he's updating records.
