3487s have the advantage that switching between 80- and 132-column modes is virtually instantaneous. Every monitor I've tried on my 3489 took at least a full second to switch resolutions. And unless somebody's got a known-good example, forget about trying to get 3488, 3489, or third-party equivalent to work with an LCD monitor (heck, our third-party unit, even though it takes a standard PS/2 keyboard and mouse, won't even work with all KVM switches).

On the other hand, if the screen goes out on your 3477 or 3487, you're (as the Mills Bros. put it) up a lazy river without a you-know-what.
