I've never used a Linux/AIX box so please excuse any erroneous assumptions. But isn't Linux, as Open Source, less expensive than i5/OS to develop? And doesn't i5/OS come with a lot of utilities, such as DB2, that have to be purchased separately for a Linux/AIX system? My point/question is: hardware seems about the same for comparable systems; it's the software that runs up the price. Or am I wrong?

I suspect that the problem for IBM is that if they decrease the price of the
i5 to make it more popular, the i5 then starts to compete with the p5, which
is the last thing they want.

So we are stuck with it as a premium machine which only a small number of
companies can afford

iSeries and the rest would decline.

You sound like there's either incompetence or a conspiracy to kill off
the i5. I suspect IBM is simply making the best of the current market
situation.

what with pSeries sales up by 14% in 2005 and iSeries down by 1%, you
can just about prove that lower prices in the computer business will
increase sales. In a way the only hope for this system of ours is for
i5 sales to drop further, forcing IBM shareholders to fire those
responsible for the premium pricing of the system, followed by a
decision to allow i5/OS to run with the governor off on p5 hardware.
