IF you want Ethernet printing to be functionally equivalent and therefore as 
dependable as twinax printing, then the only option is to use IPDS printers and 
the PSF/400 license program.

Your other cheaper, and less dependable options in order of preference are:
SNMP
IPP
PJL
LPR/LPD

IPDS for example, tells the host each time a page is printed successfully.  So 
when the last page is done, then the host knows the spool file has been 
successfully printed.  Other protocols, tell the host that the file is done 
once it has been fully received into the printer's buffer.
