Actually, other than the PITA of upgrading to V5R2, the method I am suggesting is easier and more risk free. In fact, there's a special appendix on this in the Backup and Recovery Manual. Appendix D I think. If you look at the archives you'll see that my method is often suggested, strongly. Yes, there are those who've done it without. But remember all the pitfalls: Authorization lists, user profiles, group profiles, Edit codes, PRTSYSINF, etc. And that is just for a 'less complicated' shop. Actually there's a good suggestion: PRTSYSINF. By the time you do a thorough checklist, ... And I was looking for anything I might be spacing since I have not done any kind of box upgrade in a LONG time and ditto on a box swap (S/38 to AS/400) :-) Chuck -----Original Message----- From: midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of rob@xxxxxxxxx Sent: Tuesday, August 19, 2003 1:43 PM To: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Subject: RE: Complete Box Swap 620 @ V4R5 to 810 LPAR @ V5R2 - whattowat ch for, etc. If "nothing" is coming over then why the email to the list? :-) There are just so many objects not within libraries anymore, and so many other configurations, etc, that if you could upgrade first then do a GO SAVE, 21, you'd be far better off. We are doing a "box SWAP" thankfully and nothing is coming over :-) Chuck -----Original Message----- From: midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of rob@xxxxxxxxx Sent: Tuesday, August 19, 2003 11:47 AM To: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Subject: RE: Complete Box Swap 620 @ V4R5 to 810 LPAR @ V5R2 - what towat ch for, etc. A 620? I shudder to think of all the hardware on that which might be incompatible with V5R2. However, if you can, they I would strongly recommend upgrading it to V5R2 first. Then, in theory, the IBM team could take the save and restore it into the LPAR just fine. Providing the tape drive on the new machine is compatible. Maybe they could even configure the old drive into the new machine. Check obsoleted hardware carefully. I know that numerous tape drives have died between 45 and 52.
