There is a guided tour available when you install VARPG and it can be run at any time afterwards. Also included with VARPG are a variety of sample programs that are quite stale but show how it all works. Code/400 is the editor for the code, so that probably has no big surprises for you. There is an active newsgroup and the IBM team responsible for VARPG is active with the newsgroup. My own experience is to get started with inquiry-only stuff. Lookups, inquiries, order status, etc. Also, Aim the applications to the casual users of the iSeries because these are the people that need the GUI the most since their learning curve has to be short and fool proof. There is no cycle that you are used to. Its event driven. For example you press the Exit button, the event fires, and your code is "Eval INLR= *Off" Or, you double click on a subfile item, and a detail panel opens showing the detail for that subfile record. --------------------------------------------------------- Booth Martin http://www.MartinVT.com Booth@xxxxxxxxxxxx --------------------------------------------------------- -------Original Message------- From: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Date: Monday, March 31, 2003 21:13:54 To: midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Java and Visual Basic, how to learn? Any references to a "How to get started with Visual Age RPG" guide/tutorial/etc.? >>> Booth@xxxxxxxxxxxx 03/31/03 05:25PM >>> Loyd, you might ask him if he'd let you use an IBM product that he already has and owns. I beat the drum for Visual Age RPG too regularly I know, but when I see people thinking about Visual Basic for the iSeries it makes me cringe. 1-You own VARPG 2-VARPG works, right now. 3-You know RPGIV (the language for VARPG) 4-Visual Basic projects have a reputation for never ending. There are other reasons too. If you'd like to see a few screenshots of what VARPG can look like: http://www.martinvt.com/Visual_Age_RPG/visual_age_rpg.html --------------------------------------------------------- Booth Martin http://www.MartinVT.com Booth@xxxxxxxxxxxx --------------------------------------------------------- -------Original Message------- From: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Date: Monday, March 31, 2003 19:23:48 To: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Subject: Re: Java and Visual Basic, how to learn? Not necessarily. I think the focus is on creating Windows-functional applications that access/utilize AS/400 data. Developing Internet/intranet-capable applications may be in the future, but does not appear to be the primary focus.
