oh my gosh! I didn't know the facts. 3 men can convert JDE? In that case I stand here flat-footed and jaw hanging. Also, we no longer disagree. I am with you 100% --------------------------------------------------------- Booth Martin http://www.MartinVT.com Booth@xxxxxxxxxxxx --------------------------------------------------------- -------Original Message------- From: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Date: Friday, March 07, 2003 11:15:53 To: midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: rpg free >> lazy? greedy? Jon, do you know how hard it is to change thousands of programs for hundreds of clients for little discernible added value? <rant> I _know_ that a number of two and three man shops have converted JDE themselves because they got sick of waiting and waiting and .... I _know_ of several major BPs who have converted who wish they had done it earlier because they are saving tens of thousands in support costs because the code is easier to read in RPG IV. For both them and the customers. Note I didn't say anything about going ILE - although most companies eventually make the switch to some extent. The problem is the bean counters. They can see costs (even though they are small) but can't quantify the value. I would _not_ deal with a BP that forced me to stay in RPG III - period. If they think 15 year old code is good enough then I don't want to deal with them! Sorry Booth - we don't often disagree - but on this one I feel we have all been _very_ badly served by the BPs and the biggest are the worst offenders. JDE announce that they are going to support/sell World for the foreseeable future - but they are keeping it in RPG III - give me a break! If a three man shop can convert the package surely to goodness an organization the size of JDE can manage it! </rant> Jon Paris Partner400
