Jon I agree with whole-heartedly on the JDE issue - I am a 1-man shop running JDE World 8.1 cum 3. I really wish that JDE would make the switch. But if I were to make the conversion myself, I would be shooting myself in the foot. I would then be stuck forever at 8.1 cum 3 unless I wanted to redo the conversion every time I installed the next cum package. Being a one man shop, I rely on any new functionality that JDE may provide, especially since the owner of our company has mandated that we will not modify any JDE code unless absolutely necessary. How ironic it is for us that we just converted off of Daly.com's A-Plus package in 2000 and they announce just last month that their next release, version 6.0, will be re-written in not just RPGIV, but in the /Free format as well! Kudos to them! (Hey boss, can we switch back now!?!?) Bob Cagle IT Manager Lynk, Inc. Jon, do you know how hard it is to change thousands of programs for hundreds of clients for little discernible added value? <rant> I _know_ that a number of two and three man shops have converted JDE themselves because they got sick of waiting and waiting and .... I _know_ of several major BPs who have converted who wish they had done it earlier because they are saving tens of thousands in support costs because the code is easier to read in RPG IV. For both them and the customers. Note I didn't say anything about going ILE - although most companies eventually make the switch to some extent. The problem is the bean counters. They can see costs (even though they are small) but can't quantify the value. I would _not_ deal with a BP that forced me to stay in RPG III - period. If they think 15 year old code is good enough then I don't want to deal with them! Sorry Booth - we don't often disagree - but on this one I feel we have all been _very_ badly served by the BPs and the biggest are the worst offenders. JDE announce that they are going to support/sell World for the foreseeable future - but they are keeping it in RPG III - give me a break! If a three man shop can convert the package surely to goodness an organization the size of JDE can manage it! </rant> Jon Paris Partner400 _______________________________________________ This is the Midrange Systems Technical Discussion (MIDRANGE-L) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-l or email: MIDRANGE-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l.
