The only way I know of to accomplish this is to use a language like Visual Basic to retrieve the data from your physical file and place it into an Excel spreadsheet. I wrote some RPG and CL programs that would build the physical file and then execute the Visual Basic program residing on a Windows server using RUNRMTCMD. I wrote the Visual Basic stuff in VB 4, so it's not exactly state of the art (no ADO or sockets), but it does work. You could probably pick up VB 5 or 6 fairly cheaply.
