Sure, will do. Another company put in a big ups but no generator. At each workstation they put in an orange outlet. These orange outlets were wired into outlets which would feed off of the big ups in case of power failure. Now, you do have to have someone go around to each of the outlets on a timely basis to ensure that no illegal equipment is plugged into the outlets. A common piece of illegal is electric space heaters. (Can you say senior systems analyst?) We also use the ups warning cable to plug into our 400. Our paging software notifies us if we are running off of ups. You have to get just the right cable for your 400 and your ups for it to work right. For example do you know how many different UPS-to-400 cables that Best alone makes? I was on a conference call a few years back. One of our presidents and the ONE client which supports this entire division. (Plants in multiple states/countries). Client called because of an issue in which they couldn't get to our FTP site. I told them that we have a UPS on our critical equipment. However the power outage was greater than the time our ups could keep running. I mentioned that we looked at generators but decided not to pursue one at the time. At that time the president piped up something about that this length of outage being rare and couldn't cost justify a generator. But I bet this planted a seed... I sure wouldn't ask IBM to consult on power supplies - check out the following: http://notes.net/site.nsf/613a9554cfc4ff95852568ce00586561/0ec9aa73fd6cdf7685256b100053cbf1?OpenDocument Rob Berendt ================== "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." When we get the generator we were instructed to put more stuff on it - likes lights, air conditioning, etc. Not only are these things more critical in a longer time frame (you could do without air conditioning for 45 minutes but not a day or so) but their constant load is actually better for the generator. It was once explained to me where it made sense but I forget the exact words. We are still in the early stages. We were looking at Leibert. Also a company called Generac. http://generac.com/ Boss is hearing a lot of good things about them. The status is "It's still in our budget. XXXX from facilities is handling this." Because they are now running on our AS/400, we would lose the production or shipping for two sites not to mention the political egg on our face because "they didn't have these kind of problems before we moved them onto our AS/400" kind of thing. Was it a large manufacturing site? I can't imagine the size generator we would need to keep things running here but then again maybe I just don't know what is out there for this kind of thing. We had a UPS in place that would takeover for the time it took for the generator to get up and going. Of course only the things on that UPS had no problems when the power switched. Any terminal that was signed on would vary itself off and then would have to be reset. The company would switch to generator backup at peak demand times when the weather was extremely hot or extremely cold. The comapny was able to negotiate better power rates by agreeing to this arrangment. The only problem we actually had was the one I mentioned about things getting varies off.
