We have a box between the generator and the ups which I was told is a power "cleaner". I'm no electro guru, but what this (very heavy) box contains is a bunch of compasitors that level out the power supply and suppress the "noise" that a generator creates. >From what I understand is that a generator does not create a consistent level >of output.
