  • Subject: RE: Why can't a 620-2175 be directly upgraded to an 820-2435?
  • From: Jim Damato <jdamato@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

I have participated in some upgrades where the frame remained intact and
where memory or some significant chunk of meaningful hardware stayed on the
system. While the tax issues are significant (and have inspired me to place
a call to our finance department) I don't think they pertain to the upgrade
path.

Back to the original question of:

"Does anyone know why a 620-2175 can't be directly upgraded to an 820-2435
(1523)?"

The answer is:

"Because IBM hasn't offered it as an upgrade path."

Right?

You might want to work with a business partner to see if IBM can come up
with a creative solution for you. These days IBM has been known to be a bit
more flexible on pricing and purchase options.

I'm not sure about that. We have the same serial number in our 720 that we
had in our B20. There have been 3 upgrades between them. I think Jim is
correct. It's all about marketing.

Just my 2 cents.

Jim,

I think you are mostly correct. However, there is an accounting issue.
Since you retained the serial number the AS/400 is still the same asset on
your books. If you replace the AS/400 then you get a new serial number and
a new asset on the books. I believe the IRS has rules on how much of the
old hardware must exist in the new system to be considered the same asset.
If there are any CPA's in the group they could probably give a better
description, but from my understanding this is a tax/depreciation issue
that can impede you from doing an "upgrade." However, I do not know if
this specific upgrade would be affected by this.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but it's been my understanding
that upgrade paths have little to do with anything other than marketing.
When we upgraded our 530 to a 650 we retained the serial number and a few
network cards and controllers. There are no technical criteria for a
model's upgrade path.. I believe that there's no good reason for the
limitation. IBM defines upgrade paths based on how they want to price the
 AS/400.

           Apparently, the
configurator forces a double upgrade (first to an 820-2395 or
           820-2396 then
           to the 820-2435). Thanks.

Sounds like it is dragging you through the old 820 series then on
      to the SStar series
