I just recently went over some of this turf. The optical library seems to
not have many useful APIs. Most AS/400  folks seem to go to Magellan, RVI or
one of the other image management vendors.

But consider this: IBM's new LTO tape units are fairly inexpensive and I've
been told they out-perform 3995 optical storage. And they scale up to much
larger capacities. With one of these units you have a standard tape
interface - much easier to deal with.
